"Is the current form of globalization inevitable? Material Geographies shows that the present form of globalization has been actively 'made' by corporations, governments and international agencies, as well as through the combined efforts of many smaller actors." "Taking a range of different perspectives - from financial institutions to nation states, global migration to local identity - this is a vivid exposition of how globalization works at different scales. Unique in teaching literature with its focus on the non-human, it demonstrates how globalization can be understood geographically."--Jacket.

The research in this book on the geographical context of drug addiction contributes to better understanding the etiology of addiction, its diffusion, its interaction with geographically variable environmental, social, and economic factors, and the strategies for its treatment and prevention. This book explores links between geography and drug abuse and identifies research ideas, connections, and research pathways which point to some promising avenues for future work in this area. The topics explored in Geography and Drug Addiction include: Spatial patterns of drug use and addiction Linking spatial models with drug abuse research Interaction of social and environmental factors with biochemical processes of addiction Locational analyses of drug addiction treatment and service delivery facilities Neighborhood scale studies of geographic factors (including the built environment) and their interaction with drug addiction, treatment, or prevention Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to better understanding and respond to drug addiction Spatial diffusion modeling of addictive drug usage and its changing characteristics, including also predictive modeling Social epidemiology and GIS This book will serve as an excellent resource to geographers and drug abuse researchers, including sociologists, epidemiologists, social scientists in general and public health researchers, both in policy and academia.

This work provides selected, peer-reviewed papers from the Biennial Conference on Applied Demography held in San Antonio, Texas on January 7-9 and sponsored by the Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio. The work contains chapters on several major topical areas that are central to applied demography including works on data Use and measurement, including detailed analysis of the American Community Survey and Master Address File, population estimation and projection, applied demography and health, and surveys examples of applied demographic analysis in such diverse areas as urban planning, educational planning, church selection, and private-sector marketing. The work also contains a section on the process of educating applied demographers delineating the types of skills needed by the applied demographer and providing examples of a program designed to meet such needs. Finally, the work presents beginning and concluding chapters that succinctly delineate the current characteristics and state of applied demography and the challenges facing it in the coming decades. The work provides an excellent overview of the state of applied demography at the beginning of the 21st Century which should be of interest to all demographers and be appropriate for adoption for courses in a variety of disciplines including demography, sociology, economics, geography, planning, statistics and others.

With this book the international academic discourse on mobility is taken a step further, through the intertwined perspectives of different social sciences, engineering and the humanities. The Ethics of Mobilities builds upon the recent interest in social surveillance, widening the theme to encompass a broad scale of questions, ranging from freedom and escape to social exclusion and control, thus raising important questions of ethics, identity and metaphysics.
